Homemade Spicy Sauce Recipes

There are people who love spicy food, and there are people who don’t. If you’re someone who loves the heat, then try out these easy sauces to take your dishes up a notch! They’re so good, you can pretty much add them to any dish.


Chinese-Style Chili Sauce

If you’ve been to Chinese restaurants, for sure you’ve already seen this condiment before. It’s usually paired with fried rice, noodles, or dimsum. It has a deep red color, and scattered with tons of chili flakes, a telltale sign that this sauce doesn’t play with heat.


  • 3 tbsp garlic
  • 5 pcs bird’s eye chili
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/3 cup chili flakes


  1. Blend together garlic, chili, and salt.
  2. Cook in a pan with sesame oil over medium heat.
  3. Add sugar, soy sauce, and chili flakes.


Indonesian Sambal

Sambal is a chili sauce with Southeast Asian origins. It’s essential in Southeast Asian cuisine, usually served as a condiment. Traditionally, the chili and other spices are ground with a mortar and pestle. This method helps release the flavor and essential oils. But if you’re cut for time, you can always go back to your handy blender.   


  • 1/2 cup garlic
  • 5 pcs bird’s eye chili
  • 1 red tomato, roughly chopped
  • 1 red onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup canola oil


  1. Blend together chili, garlic, tomato, onion, salt, and sugar.
  2. Cook sauce in a pan over medium heat until slightly thick (test if it coats the back of your spoon easily).


Annatto Chili Garlic Oil

Annatto is a red-colored seed that is widely used as a food coloring and to impart a bit of flavor. The color is extracted by cooking the seeds in oil. Combining garlic with chili does something magical to this sauce, you’ll be grabbing spoonfuls of this for sure.


  • 1/2 cup annatto seeds
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup garlic
  • 5 pcs bird’s eye chili


  1. Heat annatto seeds and oil in a pan. Once the pan starts bubbling, switch off the heat and strain.
  2. Blend together chili and garlic. Combine with annatto oil in pan. Cook until well incorporated.

Salsa Verde

This wonderfully fresh sauce is made with two key ingredients: tomatillos and green chili peppers. The mild heat is perfect for those who aren’t big fans of spice, but want a little kick. It’s usually paired with Mexican dishes like enchiladas and chicharonnes.



  • 1 white onion
  • 5 pcs long green chili, tops chopped off
  • 2 medium green tomatoes, roughly chopped
  • 1 bunch of coriander


  1. Boil green chili and tomatoes in a pot.
  2. Once cooked, transfer to a blender and grind. Add coriander and continue blending.
  3. Transfer to a pan over medium heat and cook until slightly thick
