GMO

I’m sure we’ve heard a lot about GMOs. But what’s the deal really? While we’re predisposed to think that it’s a dangerous method of food production that will harm our health in the long run, it isn’t exactly the case.

I’m sure we’ve heard a lot about GMOs. Groups of environmentalists staging protests that are publicized all over the television and the internet make sure of that. But what’s the deal really? While we’re predisposed to think that it’s a dangerous method of food production that will harm our health in the long run, it isn’t exactly the case.

So let me shed light on the matter. Is it really bad or are we just misinformed on the matter? Well, read on!

What is GMO?

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are organisms whose genetic make-up has been subjected to alteration with the use of genetic engineering. Genetic alteration methods when it comes to food are widely used to improve both the quality and the quantity of the agricultural produce to accommodate the growing needs of the growing population of consumers.

Through genetic modification, we have experienced a lot of advantages when it comes to food:

1.) The yields that we are getting from our farmlands have increased in insurmountable amount

2.) The physical size of our food has increased to at least ten folds

3.) Nutrient content is more concentrated and varied in contrast to its wild varieties.

Basically GMOs reduces the world-wide threat of famine.

So is it safe?

General, yes. In fact, countless peer-reviewed studies were released in the recent years that state the fact that GMOs are overall perfectly safe for human consumption1. GMOs are considered as the most widely studied foods. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) considers it as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for humans with no presumable ill-effect2. Though widely regarded as safe, it is still mandated for ANY food items, including GMOs that are sold in the market to be scrutinized by the FDA.

So what is the issue?

Due to the stemming misinformation with the aid of anti-science campaigns, and the fear of anything that is considered “out if the ordinary”, many people are regarding GMOs as unnatural. To their definition, any unnatural is already considered unsafe. Therefore, should be avoided at all cost. However, there are valid concerns that we should also be aware of. Many industries practice unethical methods of waste disposal which gravely affect our environment, while some are also curbing the rights of small farmers by occupying more lands which kills competition thus, unmerited monopoly in the farming industry which results to higher prices of commodities.

So what should we do?

Science never fails to lift humanity to progress. In fact, genetic modification is one of the best that we humans have achieved so far. In this day and age, it’s more practical to stick into facts, and not into fear. Do your research and read up on which products are genetically modified and the corresponding risks and arguments for and against it, if any. Ultimately, it all boils down to YOU and what you feel safe to eat. Nevertheless, make sure you always make informed choices.
