Abriel shares how losing 30 kg in a year is only the beginning of the journey to a healthier life.

Last October 2015, I decided it was time to change my lifestyle. I weighed about 87kg (approx. 191 lbs) and stood at about 157cm tall. What was crazy was how I was totally aware of how unfit my body was, but instead of doing anything to change it, I just became more and more hopeless.
Day and night, I was eating junk food. I didn’t work out at all, and I even had a deep-fryer in my bedroom so that when I would get hungry at 2 am, I could just fry some chicken nuggets or French fries.
I realized how my unhealthiness had taken such a big toll on my life when I started to really hate every picture of me that was posted online after hanging out with my girlfriends. When I saw those pictures of me, I wanted to disappear. I untagged myself one by one, and deleted all the photos from my phone. It got to the point that every time we would hang out, I would just leave so none of my friends could take photos of me. This was when I decided that I needed to change.
I started looking for videos on YouTube so that I could start working out in my room. I found one 30-minute workout that I enjoyed but for the first week or two, I found myself running out of breath. I started doing 15 minutes of the workout, five days a week. I started to feel good, energized, and happy after every session.
I added a lot of fruits and vegetables to my diet, and cut down my eating to two full meals a day (salad made up one meal). Whenever I felt hungry, I would snack on fruits.
After two months, I upped my workout to 45 minutes to include a full set of arms, abs, and squats, and sometimes some dance workouts afterwards. I weighed about 70kg by then, and was really happy with my progress. Once my core got stronger (around August 2016), I took up running. It was really tough at first and I was dealing with a lot of issues—I had trouble with my stomach and so on. But I didn’t give up and kept on running. By September that year I started going to the gym and working out harder. I’m now comfortable working out in front of other people.
Exactly one year after my first workout, on October 2016, I weighed 57kg. I was extremely happy with the progress I made in a year. It’s crazy how much my life has changed after losing the weight—I started to see the world differently and now have a better outlook on life.
I want everyone to know that being healthy is very important. Nothing feels better than knowing you’re doing something good for your body and learning to feel confident in your own skin. It’s not going to be easy, so keep your eyes on the prize and never stop working. Start small then work your way up. Just commit and you’ll see the results. Start now, and you won’t regret it!
10 Tips for Weight Loss:
1. Eat healthy but the way you like it. Don’t force yourself to enjoy something you don’t like. For example, make your own salad dressing and add your favorite salad toppings so you’ll enjoy eating healthy.
2. Ignore the pain, the sore muscles, and the struggles. It’s part of the journey.
3. Stick to routines. This is key in building habits that last.
4. Look in the mirror after workout instead of the weighing scale.
5. Stay away from sugary food and beverages.
6. If you can, stay away from alcohol too.
7. You can start by doing the 2-1-2 method: 2 days of clean eating then 1 cheat day, and then back to clean eating.
8. Sleep by 10 pm so you can have a good rest and do a morning walk or work out at 6 am.
9. Drink lots of water!
